La Crosse Technology WS-9611U-IT Oscar Outlook Atomic Alarm Clock The La Crosse Technology WS-9611U-IT Atomic Alarm Clock offers lots of useful time and weather information, plus Oscar Outlook, a weather boy that dresses in accordance with the weather forecast.   Click to Enlarge  The WS-9611U-IT is titanium gray with silver trim around the display. It is fairly compact at about 5 inches wide and 3 1/2 inches tall. Starting with the upper left of the WS-9611U-IT, we have an atomic clock display. When the radio tower icon is present, the clock is receiving WWVB radio transmissions*, so you know the clock will be accurate to a fraction of a second.  On the first line of the display, current time will be displayed.  By pressing the "set" button, the second line of the display can be toggled between weekday, month and day; month, day and year; or seconds and alarm time. An alarm icon displays when the alarm is enabled.  Below the time display are displays for sunrise/sunset time, and the phase of the moon displayed by one of 12 icons. By pressing the snooze button on the top of the clock, the sunrise/sunset time display can be toggled between sunrise time, sunset time, or sun duration.  The times are based on selection of one of 99 US and Canadian cities. In the center of the display is a weather forecast display made up of a weather icon, a weather tendency arrow, and Oscar Outlook, the weather boy. Depending on barometric pressure trends and outside temperature, these elements will display one of 15 displays.  The icon will display sunny, partly cloudy, clouds with rain, or clouds with snow.  The arrow will indicate the likelihood of the weather getting better or worse.  Oscar outlook will dress appropriately for the weather forecast, with outfits ranging from swimming trunks to a coat, hat and scarf. In addition, he may be accompanied by a beach chair, an umbrella, or a snow man. On the right, indoor temperature and humidity, and outdoor temperature are displayed. Outdoor temperature is sensed by an outdoor sensor and transmitted from up to 330 feet away. The WS-9611U-IT can display up to 3 remote locations with the use of additional optional sensors, one TX29U-IT sensor is included with the unit. By pressing the MIN/MAX button, minimum and maximum indoor temperature and humidity readings since the last manual reset are displayed. In addition, minimum and maximum outdoor temperature readings are displayed for the selected remote, along with time and date of reception.  The WS-9611U-IT is a fairly compact unit at about 5 inches wide, 3 1/2 inches tall, and 1 inch deep. It has a flip out table stand, or can be hung on a wall.  The LCD display has momentary LED backlighting that goes on when any button is pushed, and turns off automatically. The daily alarm function has a snooze function with programmable length from off to 30 minutes in 5 minute increments.  Digit sizes are about 3/8 inch for time, temperatures and humidity, 1/4 inch for date, and 3/16 for sunrise/sunset time. Please note that with all this information displayed on a fairly compact unit, the digits are on the small side. This unit may not be suitable for someone with marginal vision, especially if it used as an alarm clock, where the user may not be wearing their glasses. These transmissions contain time information from the U.S. atomic clock source, operated by the U.S. Commerce Department and located near Boulder, Colorado. A radio tower and waves icon to the left of the time in the LCD panel indicates successful reception of the time-synchronization signal. Note: This is an "atomic" clock. Atomic (or radio controlled) clocks receive a radio signal to set themselves. Like any radio receiver, however, they may not be able to receive the signal if they are in a building with a lot of steel in the structure, near computers or other electrical equipment that may generate interference, or if the weather is unsuitable. The signal they receive does not propagate well during the day. That's the nature of the signal, not the clock. These clocks are designed to catch the signal when they can, generally in the middle of the night, calibrate themselves, and then run quite accurately for days until they can catch another signal. When you first put batteries in the clock, it will most likely not set itself until the middle of the night. That's normal. By morning, weather permitting, it should be correct. Under less than ideal conditions, signal reception and calibration can take a few days. Also, daylight saving time changes may not be made the first night if the location and weather are not favorable.
