If your travels take you worldwide, the Oregon Scientific RMB899P World Travel Projection Clock may well be the perfect alarm clock for you. It's a compact digital atomic clock with dual time capability and dual daily crescendo alarms with snooze. In addition to projecting the time, what really sets the RM899P apart from the ordinary atomic travel alarm is its ability to receive time-synchronization radio signals not only from the U.S. atomic clock but also from those that serve Central Europe, the UK, and Japan. Instead of antenna modules that you must change when you travel, this clock has integral antennas for the atomic clocks whose signals it can receive. If you're within about 932 miles (1500 km) of an atomic clock's radio transmitter, simply select that atomic clock source on the RMB899P and your travel alarm clock will automatically synchronize time and date to the radio signal.

Slim and pocket-sized, the RMB899P atomic projection travel alarm clock looks handsome in black with semi-metallic titanium gray trim on the front. All of the silver-tone control pushbuttons and the projection lens are flush with the clock's top, which gives the front of the clock a clean, uncluttered look. A handy travel/storage pouch is included. You'll appreciate the complete accuracy and convenient features of this multi-band radio-controlled digital projection clock with ExactSet™ technology, dual time capability, calendar display, dual daily alarms with snooze, backlit LCD panel, and more.

The RMB899P automatically sets the time and date by synchronizing to the radio frequency (RF) signal from any of five atomic clock sources, depending on which one you select on the clock. The clock can receive signals at frequencies of 77 MHz, 60 MHz, and 40 MHz. The atomic clock selections are as follows:

OFF. This allows you to set the time and date manually (for example, when you are out of range of an atomic clock signal).

EU. This is the selection for Central Europe. It allows for reception of DCF-77 from Frankfurt, Germany.

UK. This is the selection for the United Kingdom. It allows for reception of MSF-60 from Rugby, England.

US. This is the selection for the continental USA and parts of Canada. It allows for reception of WWVB-60 from Colorado, USA.

JP-60. This is the selection for West Japan. It allows for reception of JJY-60 from Kyushu, Japan.

JP-40. This is the selection for East Japan. It allows for reception of JJY-40 from Fukushima, Japan.

JAPAN. This selection allows for reception of either JJY-60 or JJY-40, whichever signal is stronger.

The radio signal being received is displayed in the LCD panel above the time, and a wave icon to the left of the time indicates the strength of the received signal. In radio-controlled mode, the clock adjusts automatically for Daylight Saving Time.
The clock has three display modes for its LCD panel:

Clock Mode. This mode displays the time with seconds, digital month and date, and two-letter weekday abbreviation. The time can be in 12-hour format with AM or PM, or in 24-hour format. The calendar format can be month-date or date-month. The weekday abbreviation can be in English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish. You see the year only during manual setup.

Zone Mode. This mode displays hour-offset time for a second time zone plus the amount of hour offset from Clock Mode time. In addition to the hour offset, you have the same time and calendar setup options in this mode as in Clock Mode. If you are in Europe, the UK, or Japan and synchronized to an atomic clock, you can select +/- 23 hours. If you are in the USA and synchronized to its atomic clock, you can select +0 for Pacific, +1 for Mountain, +2 for Central, +3 for Eastern, or +/- 23 hours for other time zones.

Signal Reception Mode. This mode displays the time with seconds and RF signal reception ON or OFF.

The RMB899P's two daily alarms each sound for 2 minutes (if not silenced earlier), and each alarm has an available 8-minute snooze function.

To project the time (hour and minutes) in red and light the bright blue HiGlo™ electro-luminescent (EL) backlight for the LCD panel, you press the LIGHT/SNOOZE button on the top of the clock. Pressing this button when the alarm is sounding also activates the snooze function. The projector and backlight remain on for 5 seconds and go off automatically. You'll find the projected image to be quite large and bright for such a small clock, and you can use the clock's FOCUS knob to maximize image sharpness.

If you want continuous projection, you can power the clock from an ac adapter instead of the two included AAA alkaline batteries. Although "AC power adapter for continuous projection" is listed under "Features" on the back of the package, please be aware that an adapter is not included and must be obtained separately. You'll need one that operates from the type of ac power available where you will be using the clock. The adapter must provide 3Vdc output and have a center-positive female plug.

A keypad lock slide switch on the back of the clock lets you lock all selected operations (except RESET) and close the projector shutter for traveling.

As mentioned above, the RMB899P atomic projection travel alarm clock can be powered by two AAA alkaline batteries, which are included, or by an ac adapter with 3Vdc output, which must be purchased separately. A low-battery icon appears when the clock's batteries need replacement. From our experience with the RMB899P, it appears to have short-term memory backup (by a capacitor) that prevents loss of settings when batteries are being replaced.

Note: This product has "atomic" clock functionality. Atomic, or Radio Controlled clocks receive a radio signal to set themselves. Like any radio receiver however, they may not be able to receive the signal if they are in a building with a lot of steel in the structure, near computers or other electrical equipment that may generate interference, or if the weather is unsuitable. The signal they receive does not propagate well during the day. That's the nature of the signal, not the clock. These clocks are designed to catch the signal when they can, generally in the middle of the night, calibrate themselves, and then run quite accurately for days until they can catch another signal. When you first put in the batteries, they will most likely not set themselves until the middle of the night. That's normal. By morning, weather permitting, it should be correct. Under less than ideal conditions, it could take a few days. Daylight savings time changes may not be made the first night if location and weather are not favorable.
