XG 55
Altimeter Compass Watch
|
|
The La Crosse XG 55
Altimeter Compass Watch
with Thermometer, Barometer, Forecast, Chronograph, and Two Alarms
has to be the ultimate outdoor adventure
watch! In addition to being a digital watch with dual time, calendar,
and two daily alarms, the
La
Crosse XG 55
is also an altimeter, electronic compass, weather forecaster, and countdown timer. This watch does so
much that it actually comes with an instructional DVD titled
"Measure the Adventure" to help you get acquainted with all of
the watch's features and functions. Swiss sensor technology ensures
precise measurement of weather, altitude, and barometric pressure data.

The XG 55 Altimeter/Compass watch has a molded case in a
semi-metallic titanium color with a rotating silver-tone bezel
and five black control pushbuttons. On the bezel are 12 markers
at 5-minute intervals and 8 cardinal compass points. The strap is
durable black resin with a stainless steel buckle. The back of
the case is also stainless steel. For night viewing, the display
has a bright blue electro-luminescent backlight with auto-off
after about 5 seconds. The XG 55 is water resistant
to 30 feet (about 9 meters).

Although
highly sophisticated, the XG 55 is designed for easy
operation. A feature you'll appreciate on this watch is
the ability to switch between 12-hour and 24-hour time
format, current and dual time, and English and metric
measurement units at the push of a button. This watch
has a large three-row display for easy viewing.
The
XG 55 has
eight major function modes. These are
Current Time, Daily Alarm, Chronograph (stopwatch with lap
memory recall), Timer (countdown), Dual Time, Barometer,
Altimeter, and Compass. Here's what the watch
does in each mode.
Current
Time
Mode: During
normal operation in Current Time Mode, the XG 55 displays the time
in the large second row as hour, minutes, and seconds
in your choice of 12-hour format (with A for AM or P for
PM) or 24-hour format. A
circular bar graph around the outer edge of the display also
shows the passage of seconds. For the display's top row, you can
opt to show a three-letter weekday abbreviation in
English, the current temperature in °F
or °C, an altitude tendency bar graph, or a pressure
tendency bar graph. You can even option the watch to
alternate between these four displays. The third
(bottom) row of the display shows the month and calendar
date. This watch's auto-calendar is
pre-programmed from year 2004 to 2099. In Current Time
Mode, one of
five pressure-based weather forecast icons is always
displayed at the right side of the top row: Sunny,
Partly Cloudy, Cloudy, Rainy, or Stormy.
During
setup in this mode, you can select not only the
time format but also the month-date order (mm:dd or
dd:mm), the LCD panel contrast (10 levels), and key beep
on or off.
Daily Alarm Mode: Two independent daily alarms
plus an hourly chime can be set in Alarm Mode. Depending
upon the alarm being set, AL1 or AL2 appears in the top
row of the display. The alarm time is displayed in the
second row, and On or Off (for alarm enabled or
disabled) is displayed in the third row. In Current Time
mode, an alarm icon (sound waves) tells you that an
alarm is enabled, and a bell icon tells you that the
hourly chime is on.
Chronograph
Mode: In Chronograph
Mode, the XG 55 displays CHR in the top row of the display.
Elapsed time is shown as hours, minutes, and seconds in
the second row and hundredths of a second in the third
row. This is unless you are recording lap times, in
which case you see a lap number in the top row.
When you are done recording lap times (100 laps
maximum), a lap memory feature lets you can view total accumulated elapsed
time and then the times for each lap in ascending order.
When the
chronograph is running, the circular bar graph animation moves at high
speed (one complete circle per second). Maximum count-up range of the chronograph
is 99 hours, 59 minutes, 59 seconds. Timer
Mode: In Timer Mode, the XG 55 counts down in 1-second
increments from the time you set. Maximum range of the countdown
timer is 99 hours, 59 minutes, 59 seconds. In this mode, you see
TMR in the top row of the display and the set time in the second
row. The third row shows the current time as hour and minutes. When the timer is counting down,
the circular bar graph shows the passage of seconds in a
counterclockwise direction. When the countdown reaches 10
minutes, the watch beeps at 1-minute intervals. When the
countdown reaches 1 minute,
the watch beeps at 10-second intervals. When the countdown
reaches 5 seconds, the watch beeps each second. When the
countdown reaches 0, you hear a 30-second beep and can press any
button to silence it and reload the set time. If you
stop the timer before the countdown reaches 0, you can
either restart it from where it is or reload the set time. For convenient
setting, the countdown timer has five quick-set values (QSVs)
of 3, 5, 10, 15, and 45 minutes plus a user preset value
(UPV), which can be set for any time up to the maximum. Dual Time
Mode: In Dual Time Mode, you can set and view a second time in hour and
minutes. In this mode, you see T2 in the top row and the dual time
as hour, minutes, and seconds in the second row. The circular bar graph
also
shows the passage of seconds. The third row is blank. A weather
forecast icon is displayed in Dual Time Mode as well as
Current Time Mode. Barometer
Mode:
In Barometer Mode, you can view the current pressure in
hectopascals/millibars (hPa/mb) or inches of mercury (inHg)
in the second row of the display. In the top row, the XG 55
has two display
choices, a pressure history graph for the past 23 hours or a
digital temperature display in °F
or °C.
Current time is displayed as hour and minutes in the
bottom row. The circular bar graph
shows the passage of seconds. In
place of current pressure and time, you can choose to
display the pressure recorded at each of the past 23
hours along with the time of the reading. Although the
barometer is calibrated at the factory, you can
recalibrate it to a known pressure reading for absolute
pressure. Altimeter
Mode: In Altimeter
Mode, you can view the current altitude in meters or
feet in the second row of the display. In the top row, the
XG 55 has two display
choices, an altitude history graph for the past 23 hours or a
digital temperature display in °F
or °C.
Current time is displayed as hour and minutes in the
bottom row. The circular bar graph
shows the passage of seconds. In
place of current altitude and time, you can choose to
display the altitude recorded at each of the past 23
hours along with the time of the reading. Altitude
measurement is based on air pressure. An
altitude calibration feature allows you to set the
altimeter
to zero for relative altitude readings or to a known
altitude for absolute altitude readings. As it comes
from the factory, the XG 55 is calibrated for a sea
level pressure of 1013.2 mb/hPa. For maximum accuracy,
this can be recalibrated to a known sea level pressure
in your location. Compass
Mode: In Compass Mode, the top row of the display shows the bearing
(compass point, such as NW or SSE) of the direction in which the
watch's pointer is pointing. The second row shows the bearing
(digital degrees) of the direction in which the watch's pointer
is pointing. Current
time is displayed as hour and minutes in the bottom row.
The circular bar graph
shows the passage of seconds. The XG 55's
compass is a magnetic compass and thus points to magnetic north,
which is slightly different from true north. The angular
difference between magnetic north and true north is called
magnetic declination, and its amount (degrees and minutes) and
direction (east or west) depend on your location on the planet.
As part of setup, the XG 55 lets you compensate for magnetic
declination. The user manual provides the declinations of 64
major locations worldwide. Compass
Mode lets you not only determine direction but also measure the
direction of an object from a reference point as either a
compass point or digital bearing in degrees. You can select
normal bearing direction or backward bearing direction. With
backward bearing, the watch displays the direction directly
opposite the normal bearing direction. The XG 55 can also check
your position on a map by backward bearing, and, if you are hiking on a
track, the watch can keep your track course correct. A compass
lock function is available to lock important direction readings
in Compass Mode. Also in Compass Mode, the watch goes into an
idle state after 1 minute. Pressing any button except
the Light
button returns the watch to its compass display. This
watch comes ready to use with one CR2032 3V lithium battery installed. A
low battery icon appears when it's time
to change the battery. Expected battery life is 1.5
years under normal operating conditions as described in
the XG 55 user manual.
The
highly versatile and multifunctional XG 55 Digital Altimeter Watch with Compass from La Crosse Technology will keep you on
track on your next climbing, hiking, hunting, backpacking,
skiing, or other outdoor excursion. Wear it and stay
constantly informed of changing environmental
conditions.
