La Crosse Technology WS-8349U
Atomic Clock with Giant, Extra Large Display, Indoor Temperature and Humidity, Outdoor Temperature, Weather Forecast, and Snooze Alarm

The La Crosse Technology WS-8349U Digital Atomic Wall Clock shows indoor temperature and humidity, outdoor temperature, month, date, day and a weather forecast. This clock shows the hour and minutes in numbers a full 4 inches tall. A flashing colon (:) between hour and minutes indicates seconds, and digital seconds can be optionally displayed in the lower section of the LCD panel. Depending on the selected display mode, digital seconds are about 3/4 inch or 1 inch tall. The indoor temperature, indoor humidity, month, and weekday are about 3/4 inch tall. The outdoor temperature and numeric date are about 1 inch tall. (In the temperature displays, tenths of a degree are smaller than the other numbers.) The forecast icon varies in size, depending on which icon is displayed. The largest icon (sun with clouds) is about 1-3/4 inches wide by 1-1/8 inches tall. This digital atomic clock with alarm and snooze is ideal for medium to large rooms and also for folks whose vision is less than perfect.

Featuring contemporary styling, the WS-8349U Jumbo Atomic Wall Clock looks great in vertically brushed aluminum with a metallic silver-tone plastic bezel around the two-section display. This clock is is medium-large at about 12 inches wide by 11-3/4 inches tall. Most of the clock's front is taken up by its big 2-section LCD panel. The upper section is about 7-1/2 inches wide by 4-1/4 inches high, and the lower section is about 7-1/2 inches wide by 2-3/8 inches high. The daily alarm has a 10-minute snooze function. Mount this clock on a wall, or extend the integral foldout stand on the back and place it on a table or a shelf.

The WS-8349U has four user-selectable display modes. Information shown in the initial display mode (pictured) includes hour and minutes, month and date, weekday, indoor temperature, indoor relative humidity, outdoor temperature, and weather forecast. The three other display modes let you display clock seconds digitally in place of indoor humidity, indoor temperature, or outdoor temperature. A tower and waves icon appears in the upper left corner of the top (hour and minutes) section of the LCD panel to indicate successful reception of the atomic clock time-synchronization radio signal.
In addition to large displays, this clock's LCD panel has 8 user-selectable contrast levels for optimum viewing under a variety of lighting conditions.
The three weather forecast icons that can be displayed by the WS-8349U are:

Sunny: The weather is expected to improve (not that it will be sunny).
Sun with Clouds: The weather is expected to be fair (not that it will be partly cloudy).
Clouds with Rain: The weather is expected to worsen (not that it will actually rain or snow).

If the barometric pressure is currently changing, an up or down weather tendency arrow is displayed along with the forecast icon. The up arrow indicates increasing pressure and that the weather is expected to improve or remain good. The down arrow indicates decreasing pressure and that the weather is expected to worsen or remain poor. No arrow indicates stable air pressure.

On this clock, the four control pushbuttons are located on the back panel to give the front of the clock a clean, contemporary look.
When you set the alarm time on the WS-8349U, it appears in the lower section of the LCD panel where the indoor temperature and humidity are shown in the initial display mode during normal operation. The alarm is automatically switched on when the alarm time is set, and the alarm-on state is indicated by an alarm icon between the moon phase and the calendar month. After the alarm time is set, you can turn the alarm on or off during normal operation by pressing the ALM (alarm) button.
We should mention that the outdoor temperature is transmitted to the clock by an included TX6U wireless remote thermo sensor/transmitter. Maximum transmission range in open areas is 330 feet (100 meters) when the TX6U is used with the WS-8349U. Although the TX6U is splash-resistant, be sure to mount it where it is sheltered from direct precipitation and also from direct sunlight.

Three forecast icons predict the weather for 12 to 24 hours in the future with 70% to 75% accuracy.

A trend arrow (up or down) is displayed when the barometric pressure is rising or falling.

Radio-Controlled Time:

The NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology, Time and Frequency Division) maintains a radio station, WWVB, in Ft. Collins, Colorado. The WWVB radio station derives its signal from the NIST atomic clock in Boulder, Colorado. A team of atomic physicists is continually measuring every second of every day, to an accuracy of ten billionths of a second per day. These physicists have created an international standard, measuring a second as 9,192,631,770 vibrations of a Cesium-133 atom in a vacuum.

WWVB (the station’s identification just like any other radio station) continuously broadcasts time and frequency signals at 60 kHz. The carrier frequency provides a stable frequency reference traceable to the national standard. There are no voice announcements on the station, but a time code is synchronized with the 60 kHz carrier and is broadcast continuously at a rate of 1 bit per second using pulse width modulation. The time code contains the year, day of year, hour, minute, second, and flags that indicate the status of Daylight Saving Time, leap years, and leap seconds.

The La Crosse Technology WS-8349U Radio Controlled Digital Clock:

The La Crosse Technology Radio Controlled Digital Clock maintains its incredible accuracy by automatically tuning into the WWVB radio signal. The built-in antenna ensures reliable signal reception up to 2000 miles (3200km) from the WWVB transmitter. As a result, the La Crosse Technology clock will calibrate to the atomic clock not only throughout the mainland U.S. but also in much of Canada. You need only insert the battery, wait until the signal is received, and program the desired additional settings. In locations outside of WWVB range, the La Crosse clock can be manually set and will provide the high degree of accuracy of any quality quartz clock.

In a nutshell, here's how the the La Crosse clock works: The clock's antenna is specifically tuned for optimal reception of the 60 kHz time signal. The time signal received on the antenna is demodulated by an onboard receiver, which sends the information to the clock's CMOS microprocessor for decoding. Once your clock has automatically set its time for the first time, it ensures continuing accuracy by automatically tuning into the WWVB radio signal once per day at midnight. (If no signal is detected, the clock performs its WWVB check hourly until the signal is found.) As long as your clock is kept within transmitter range, it will continue to display the absolutely precise time, automatically adjusting for summer time/winter time changeovers if the Daylight Saving Time option is ON. Should you move your clock out of transmitter range for an extended period of time, the clock will continue to operate as a highly accurate quartz-controlled clock. Upon re-entering the transmitter range, your clock will correct itself again to the precise WWVB time signal.

Note: This product has "atomic" clock functionality. Atomic, or Radio Controlled clocks receive a radio signal to set themselves. Like any radio receiver however, they may not be able to receive the signal if they are in a building with a lot of steel in the structure, near computers or other electrical equipment that may generate interference, or if the weather is unsuitable. The signal they receive does not propagate well during the day. That's the nature of the signal, not the clock. These clocks are designed to catch the signal when they can, generally in the middle of the night, calibrate themselves, and then run quite accurately for days until they can catch another signal. When you first put in the batteries, they will most likely not set themselves until the middle of the night. That's normal. By morning, weather permitting, it should be correct. Under less than ideal conditions, it could take a few days. Daylight savings time changes may not be made the first night if location and weather are not favorable.

La Crosse Technology TX6U Remote Sensor/TransmitterThe TX6U is the more common remote temperature only sensor for the La Crosse Technology weather instruments. The La Crosse Technology TX6U does not have a display of it’s own. The TX6U uses 2 AA batteries, and is excellent for use for extended periods of operation in cold temperatures. In harsh climates, the alkaline batteries in the TX6U may be replaced with Lithium batteries for extended low temperature operation.
