Honeywell TE923W Wireless Weather Station
with Remote Control and Atomic Alarm Clock

When it comes to home weather stations, the Honeywell TE923W Weathertime® Professional Weather Station is in a class of itself. First off, it's totally wireless, so there are no interconnections required between the remote sensors. There's even a wireless remote control to make selections on the main (display) unit. And because the main unit can be powered by an ac adapter, the display backlight can remain on constantly. In addition to the usual temperature-humidity, wind, and rain outdoor sensors, the TE923W includes a UV (ultraviolet) sensor to measure and report the intensity of the sun's rays. A weather software CD-ROM and a USB cable for your pc are also part of the package. The radio-controlled ("atomic") clock in the TE923W has two alarms, each with programmable snooze, plus an ice warning pre-alarm.

For years, Honeywell has been the name to trust for high-quality indoor environmental controls. Now you can have the same quality in environmental monitoring. For superior environmental instrumentation, why not go with Honeywell, the name you know you can trust?

Honeywell TE923W Professional Weather Station

The Honeywell TE923W Professional Wireless Weather Station is silver with a black front panel. It's about 8.7 inches wide and stands about 6.4 inches tall. This station can rest free-standing on a table or shelf, or with the stand folded in, it can hang on a wall. The control pushbuttons are under the hinged portion of the front panel to the right of the display, or you can also use the supplied infrared remote control to make your display selections.

Display and Backlight. The LCD panel on the TE923W main unit is about 4-3/4 inches (121 mm) wide by 4-1/4 inches (108 mm) high. The largest digits in the various display "windows" are the ones for hour and minutes (or month and date), and these are about 9/16 inch (14.3 mm) tall. Temperature, humidity, rainfall, and UV index digits are almost exactly 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) tall. The digits and characters that indicate degree tenths, barometric pressure, wind speed, wind chill, weekday or clock seconds, and sunrise and sunset times are smaller.

When the TE923W is powered from the included ac adapter, you can turn the blue LED display backlight on (continuously) or off, or you can set it to toggle on and off automatically based on ambient light level. With automatic toggling selected, you can adjust the light sensor's sensitivity to high or low, as appropriate for your particular environment. With battery-only powering (four AA alkaline), the backlight comes on for about 5 seconds when you press the LIGHT / SNOOZE bar on the top of the station. Also with battery-only main unit powering, you cannot use the infrared remote control. If you use the ac adapter to power the station, you can still install batteries to provide backup power in case of an ac outage so that programmed settings and data in memory will not be lost.

The largest display window on the TE923W is the Pressure and Weather Forecast Window at the top left of the LCD panel. In it you'll see a kinetic forecast icon (Sunny, Partly Cloudy, Cloudy, Light Rain, Heavy Rain, Unstable Weather, or Snow) along with a moon phase icon, the sea level pressure, and a 24-hour sea-level pressure history graph. Just so you know, the weather forecast is for 12 to 24 hours in the future and is about 70% accurate. Pressure can be displayed in inHg (inches of mercury), hPa/mb (hectopascals/millibars), or mmHg (millimeters of mercury). The SET button lets you display the local barometric pressure, sea level pressure, or your set altitude. We should mention that the TE923W has the widest altitude compensation range of any weather station we have yet seen. You can enter your altitude from -657 to +16,404 feet (-200 to +5000 meters) and view what your local pressure would be at sea level (as reported on radio and tv). Additional displays available in this window include past and future moon phases (+/-39 days) and Channel 1 temperature and humidity history bar graphs.

The UV Window displays sunlight intensity as either the UV index (UVI) or Minimal Erythemal Doses per Hour (MED/h). You also see the exposure level (e.g., LOW), a corresponding comfort (face) icon for that level, a small bar graph, and a low battery icon if the UV sensor's battery is low. Additional available information included daily and weekly maximum readings.

The Clock and Alarms Window can display hour and minutes (12-hour format with PM, or 24-hour format) along with either a weekday abbreviation, your selected city code (from an extensive list in te User Manual), or clock seconds. As alternatives to these, it can display month, date, and year or UTC (Coordinated Universal Time (also known as Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT). Daylight Saving Time changes are automatic, but if you enter USR (for User) as the city code, you can turn auto-DST changes off if desired. If you do enter USR, you'll also need to enter your longitude, latitude, and time zone. The weekday abbreviation can be in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, or Dutch. The Clock and Alarms Window is also where you can set and view alarm status. Alarm functions include a weekday alarm, a single day alarm, and a cold weather pre-alarm.

  • The weekday alarm will sound at your chosen time every day of the week, Monday through Friday.
  • The single day alarm is set to sound once. It can be used to wake at a different time any day of the week without disturbing the weekday setting.
  • The cold weather (ice warning) pre-alarm feature allows you to set the alarm to go off early if the outdoor temperature is below freezing. The pre-alarm feature can be set to trigger the weekday or single alarm early in increments of 15 minutes, from 15 minutes to 90 minutes.

You can program a snooze interval of up to 15 minutes, and all three alarms will have this snooze interval. Additional items in the Clock and Alarms Window include a tower and waves icon to indicate WWVB atomic clock signal reception and strength and a low battery icon if the batteries in the main unit are low.

The Sunrise/Sunset Window displays either the sunrise and sunset times for the city you selected (along with sunrise and sunset icons) or that city's latitude and longitude. Here is where you enter your own latitude and longitude if you opted, in which case you'll see the sunrise and sunset times for your entered location.

The Temperature and Humidity Window at the top right of the display shows the temperature (in °F or °C) and relative humidity (in %) for indoors and the selected outdoor (or other remote) channel. You also see a signal reception icon for the selected thermo-hygro remote. Pressing the SET button displays the dew points in place of the temperatures. You can option the display to automatically scan through all active channels. Here is where you can program high and low temperature alerts for each remote channel and view recorded minimum and maximum indoor and outdoor temperatures and humidity.

The Rain Window displays (in inches or millimeters) the rainfall for the past hour, past 24 hours, yesterday, past week, or past month. It can also display a rain rate estimate in inches or millimeters per hour. Here is where you can also program a rainfall alert that is activated if daily rainfall exceeds your programmed amount. A low battery icon appears in this window if the batteries in the rainfall remote are low.

In the Wind Window, the wind direction is shown by an animated compass display. The wind angle can be displayed as compass points (e.g., WNW) or in bearings from true north (e.g., 22.5°). At the upper left of the window is displayed your choice of wind chill or actual temperature at the remote anemometer's location. At the lower left of the window, you can view the average wind speed for the last 10 minutes, the maximum gust speed for that period, and the maximum average wind speed and maximum gust speed recorded during the day. Here is where you can also program wind and gust alerts that are activated if the average wind speed and the gust speed exceed your programmed values.

Remote Control and Sensors. The infrared remote control included with the TE923W weather station is the TS607. The included outdoor weather remotes are as follows:

The infrared remote control included with the TE923W weather station is the TS607.
TS906 rain gauge (maximum transmission range of 100 feet or 30 meters with no interference). This remote mounts on a horizontal surface and has an integral leveler.
TS805 anemometer (maximum transmission range of 100 feet or 30 meters with no interference). This remote mounts on a wall or pole.
TS704 UV sensor (maximum transmission range of 328 feet or 100 meters with no interference). This remote can be mounted on the ground, on a stake, or on a wall and comes with a ground mounting stand, a stake, and a wall mounting base.
TS34C five-channel temperature and humidity sensor with display (maximum transmission range of 328 feet or 100 meters with no interference). This remote can rest on a horizontal surface, or it can be wall-mounted via a keyhole slot on the back.

Although only one TS34C thermo-hygro sensor is included, the TE923W can actually work with up to five of these remotes. Additional TS34C remotes must be purchased separately.

The infrared remote control uses two AAA alkaline batteries, and all outdoor weather remotes use two AA alkaline batteries. If below-freezing temperatures are expected, use lithium batteries in the outdoor remotes instead of alkaline. Also, it's a good idea to bring the rain bucket inside if below-freezing temperatures are expected so that ice formation and expansion will not occur and cause damage.

Setup and Use. For all of its features and sophistication, the TE923W is quite easy to set up and use. During setup, you must program barometric pressure parameters; the time, date, and weekday language; and your location data for sunrise and sunset times. Optional programmable parameters are time alarms, temperature alerts, daily rainfall alert, and wind alerts. After setup, you navigate between the display windows by using the up arrow and down arrow buttons. An icon in each window flashes when that window is selected for viewing. After a window is selected, the SET button toggles between basic display modes in the window, and other buttons can be used for changing the displayed information if this is an option in that window.

PC Software and Cable. Without being connected to a pc, the TE923W can track 200 weather records. To install the included software for additional capabilities, you simply put the CD-ROM in your pc and follow the prompts on the screen. Unlike some professional weather stations that have serial ports, the TE923W has a USB port and includes a USB cable, so you won't have to search for a compatible serial-to-USB adapter cable. See the Specifications below for hardware requirements to run the software.

Note: The TE923W Professional Weather Station has "atomic" clock functionality. Atomic, or radio controlled, clocks receive a radio signal to set themselves. Like any radio receiver, however, they may not be able to receive the signal if they are in a building with a lot of steel in the structure, near computers or other electrical equipment that may generate interference, or if the weather is unsuitable. The signal they receive does not propagate well during the day. That's the nature of the signal, not the clock. These clocks are designed to catch the signal when they can, generally in the middle of the night, calibrate themselves, and then run quite accurately for days until they can catch another signal. When you first put in the batteries, they will most likely not set themselves until the middle of the night. That's normal. By morning, weather permitting, it should be correct. Under less than ideal conditions, it could take a few days. Also, Daylight Saving Time changes may not be made the first night if location and weather are not favorable.
