Honeywell TE653ELW
Desktop Weather Station

With Forecast, Wireless Indoor Outdoor Thermo-Hygrometer with Memory, Barometer with History Graph, and Atomic Clock with Dual Alarms plus Low-Temperature Pre-Alarm and Moon Phase

For years, Honeywell has been the name to trust for high-quality indoor environmental controls. Now you can have the same high quality in environmental monitoring. For superior environmental instrumentation, why not go with Honeywell, the name you know you can depend on?

Honeywell TE653ELW Desktop Weather Station

The Honeywell TE653ELW is silver with black trim. This weather station is about 3-3/4 inches high by 7/1/4 inches wide.. On the left side of the large LCD panel are displayed a forecast icon with pressure trend arrow, a 24-hour pressure history graph, a moon phase icon, and the current barometric pressure. On the right side are displayed the outdoor temperature and humidity from up to three locations, the indoor temperature and humidity, trend arrows for all temperatures, the indoor comfort level, and the time, month, and date. With the included stand installed, this station can be placed on a table, shelf, desk, or similar location. Without the stand, the station can be hung on a wall.

Honeywell calls the TE653ELW Weather Forecast Station a "desktop weather station" on the package, but you can also hang it on a wall if you don't install the included table stand. This product is more than just a weather forecaster. It's a wireless indoor outdoor thermometer and hygrometer, a barometer, and an atomic clock with dual alarms, calendar, and moon phase. The highly informative six-section LCD panel on the TE653ELW has a soft blue backlight with 5-second auto-off for night viewing.

In the upper left section of the LCD panel, one of five forecast icons is displayed: Sunny, Partly Cloudy, Cloudy, Light Rain, or Heavy Rain. The barometric pressure-based forecast is for the next 12 to 24 hours and about 70% accurate. A steady, rising, or falling pressure trend arrow  is displayed along with the forecast. A rising pressure trend arrow indicates that the weather is expected to improve. A steady trend arrow means that the weather is not expected to change significantly. A falling trend arrow tells you that the weather is expected to worsen.

Below the forecast is displayed a 24-hour pressure history bar graph that indicates pressure in inches of mercury (inHg) or millibars/hectopascals (mb/hPa). Below the graph is the current barometric pressure displayed digitally in inHg or mb/hPa. Repeatedly pressing the HISTORY button calls up digital historic pressure readings for  -1 to -39 hours. The digital historic reading automatically reverts to the current reading after about 6 or 7 seconds.

For the most accurate forecasts and pressure history, you can set your altitude in either feet or meters. After you do this, you can use the PRESSURE/ALTITUDE button on the back of the station to alternately display local (actual) pressure, sea-level equivalent pressure (the reading that's broadcast on radio and tv), and the set altitude. You can select any altitude from -700 to +1210 meters in 1-meter increments or from -2297 to +3969 feet in increments of 3 feet, 3 feet, and 4 feet in repetitive order. Holding the up or down arrow button on the back of the station depressed speeds up the selection process. When you get near your location's altitude, release the button and then press the button momentarily for 1-meter or 3- or 4-foot changes.

To the right of the forecast and pressure information are displayed temperatures, time, and date. At the top are the outdoor temperature (with trend) and outdoor humidity from up to three locations. Below this are the indoor temperature (with trend), humidity, and comfort level (WET, COMFORT, or DRY). Below the indoor data is the time as hour and minutes with either seconds or weekday, as selected by the MODE button.

The clock in the TE653ELW calibrates itself to the world's most accurate clock every night by receiving WWVB 60kHz radio transmissions. These transmissions contain time information from the U.S. atomic clock source operated by the U.S. Commerce Department near Boulder, Colorado. Successful reception of the radio time signal is indicated by a tower and waves icon just above seconds or weekday. After synchronization occurs, you can select your continental U.S. time zone (Pacific, Mountain, Central or Eastern). The selected zone is displayed in a U.S. map icon just above the radio reception icon.

The time format is user-selectable for 12-hour with AM or PM, or 24-hour. Daylight Saving Time changes are automatic, but if you live in an area that does not observe DST (Arizona and parts of Indiana), all you need to do to obtain the correct time is change the time zone.

The TE653ELW has a weekday alarm and a single day alarm plus a low-temperature pre-alarm feature These are 4-minute crescendo alarms with available 5-minute snooze.

  • The weekday alarm sounds at your set time on Monday through Friday.
  • The single day alarm sounds once on the set day and time. It can be used to wake your at a different time on any day of the week without disturbing the weekday alarm setting.
  • The cold weather pre-alarm feature allows you to set the weekday or single day alarm to go off early if the Channel 1 outdoor temperature drops below freezing. The pre-alarm feature can be set to trigger the selected alarm from 15 to 90 minutes early in 15-minute increments.

Month and date are displayed digitally in that order. The two-letter weekday abbreviation can be displayed as an alternative to seconds and in your choice of English, Spanish, French, German, or Italian. For the moon phase, one of eight different icons is displayed in accordance with the calendar. On this clock, as the moon waxes, fewer and fewer sections of the icon remain filled in until no sections are black and an empty circle represents the full moon. The moon phase history for the last 39 days can be displayed, and the station has a moon phase scanner for year 2000 to 2099.

For the TE653ELW’s temperature displays, you can select either °C or °F. The TE653ELW stores maximum and minimum temperature and humidity readings--both indoor and all outdoor--since the last memory reset. These are available at the push of a button.

One TS33C remote temperature and humidity transmitter is included. Up to three remote transmitters can be used with the TE653ELW. Maximum transmission range of these remotes is 100 feet in open space with no interference. Remotes can be any combination of the following:

  • TS33C. The TS33C remote transmits temperature and humidity data, and it also has an LCD panel for local viewing that displays the temperature and humidity readings that it transmits. For the temperature display, you can select either °C or °F.
  • TS33F. The TS33F remote transmits temperature and humidity like the TS33C. The temperature is actually sensed at the end of a waterproof external probe wire. The TS33F can be used for many applications, including pool, pond, or spa temperature, refrigerator or freezer temperature, and greenhouse or soil temperature.
  • TS23C. The TS23C is functionally the same as the TS33C except that it has no display of its own.

If you're using more than one remote, you can option the station to display the temperature and humidity readings from each remote in sequential order.

Just so you know, the station's temperature, time, and pressure digits are about 7/16 inch tall (degree tenths and seconds/weekday are about half that size). Month and date digits are about 3/8 inch.

For powering, the TE653ELW main unit and the TS13C remote each require two AA (1.5V) alkaline batteries. These are not included and must be purchased separately.

To use the TE653ELW as a free-standing unit, simply install the snap-on (and easily removable) table stand. Or use the keyhole slot on the station's back panel to hang it on a wall.

With modern styling that's handsome and unfussy, the TE653ELW will look good while providing lots of useful weather data plus absolutely accurate atomic time in homes and offices alike.

Note: The clock in the TE653ELW is an "atomic" clock. Atomic (or radio controlled) clocks receive a radio signal to set themselves. Like any radio receiver, however, they may not be able to receive the signal if they are in a building with a lot of steel in the structure, near computers or other electrical equipment that may generate interference, or if the weather is unsuitable. The signal they receive does not propagate well during the day. That's the nature of the signal, not the clock. These clocks are designed to catch the signal when they can, generally in the middle of the night, calibrate themselves, and then run quite accurately for days until they can catch another signal. When you first put batteries in the clock, it will most likely not set itself until the middle of the night. That's normal. By morning, weather permitting, it should be correct. Under less than ideal conditions, signal reception and calibration can take a few days. Also, Daylight Saving Time changes may not be made the first night if the location and weather are not favorable.
