You probably remember from
your school days that Galileo Galilei improved the
telescope, discovered Jupiter's first
four moons and the phases of Venus, and determined that
the earth orbits the sun (not vice versa). You may also
remember that, from atop the Leaning Tower of Pisa, he
determined that objects fall at the same rate regardless
of their weight. But if your teachers were like mine, they
focused on these accomplishments and skipped over
Galileo's discovery of the principle of relative
density--and the wonderfully ingenious liquid thermometer
that was a direct result of this discovery.

in several sizes, La Crosse McCormick's Galileo indoor
liquid thermometers are magnificent creations that make
Galileo's 400-year-old principle of relative density a
functional reality. Galileo liquid thermometers add
sparkle and focus to any setting.
|
The principle of relative
density states that
specifically weighted floating bubbles predictably rise or
sink in a liquid as the temperature of that liquid
changes. And it is this principle that resulted in the
Galileo liquid thermometer. Today, La Crosse McCormick
brings you magnificent interpretations of this fascinating
and functional instrument. The manufacturer describes it
as "the point at which science meets art," and
that's certainly an accurate statement.
The La Crosse McCormick
Galileo thermometer is a glass cylinder containing
liquid-filled colored glass floats, or bubbles, in precise
0.006-gram increments. Within the cylinder, the glass
bubbles are suspended in the same liquid that they
contain. As the temperature of the liquid in the cylinder
changes, the bubbles rise or sink. Each bubble
has an attached metal tag indicating a temperature. When
a bubble reaches its point of specific gravity, it sinks
to the bottom of the cylinder. To
tell the temperature, you simply read the tag on the
lowest floating bubble.
La Crosse McCormick's
Galileo thermometers offer several important advantages
over those of other makers. The cylinders are
laboratory-grade glass with thick walls for sturdiness.
The enclosed liquid is nontoxic and environmentally
safe--an inert oil/hydrocarbon solution resembling mineral oil.
Both the glass and the liquid are the clearest available.
And the 11-inch (smallest) size is available with 5
temperature readings, which is one more than others of
that size.
These thermometers are
carefully packed in form-fitted foam cases that virtually
assure safe arrival. Select from three different
models/sizes, which are described below.
