SkyScan 34202 Atomic Projection

Temperature, and Daily Alarm with Snooze

Atomic Projection Clock Radio with
Time, Calendar, and Indoor Temperature plus Daily Alarm with Wake-to-Alarm
or Wake-to-Radio and Snooze Functions, Alarm Volume Control, and Always-On Backlight

The SkyScan 34202
Atomic Projection Clock Radio by Equity Time is a digital AM/FM clock
radio that displays the time, date, weekday, and indoor temperature in its LCD panel and also projects the
time and indoor temperature in red numbers on the wall or ceiling. And you're really going
to like the projected display. It's among the largest and brightest of any projection clock we've seen (details on this later). Below the
LCD panel is
the AM/FM radio dial, and to the left of the panel is a
2-1/2 inch inch speaker. The wheel-shaped projection unit is located on the
left side of the clock behind the speaker. This ac-powered digital atomic
projection clock radio is designed as a free-standing unit only and
cannot be wall mounted.

The
SkyScan 34202 atomic projection clock radio is medium in size at 7-7/8
inches wide by 3-9/16 inches tall. The case is
semi-metallic silver and black in color. Except for a focus knob on the
projection unit and the AM/FM switch and radio knobs on
the right side, all of this clock's controls are on the top for easy
access. This clock's multi-curved styling is a nice
alternative to the rectangular styling of many digital
clocks. The LCD panel is about 3-1/2 inches wide by 1-7/8 inches high. Hour and
minutes digits are quite large at 1 inch tall, and seconds are about
7/16 inch. The month is about 5/16 inch tall, the date is 3/8 inch,
and the indoor temperature is 1/2 inch. A small three-letter weekday
abbreviation in English appears above the time. The soft blue
display backlight remains on continuously except when an ac power outage occurs
and battery backup is
in effect.

You'll appreciate
both the absolute accuracy and convenient features of the SkyScan 34202
digital atomic projection radio clock. For the time format, you can select 12-hour
with PM, or 24-hour. Calendar information is pre-programmed from year 2000
(default is 01/01/03). The manual doesn't indicate the last year of
calendar programming, but based on other SkyScan products, we're guessing
it's no sooner than 2039. The year is displayed only during manual setup,
which is optional. If you do set the clock
manually, you'll need to set the time, year, month, and date. The
weekday abbreviation updates automatically as the date is set.
Successful
reception of the time-synchronization radio signal is indicated by a
radio tower and waves icon above clock seconds. You
can select/change your continental U.S. time zone (EST, CST, MST, or
PST) at any time by means of a switch on the top of the clock. If you live in an area that does not observe Daylight
Saving Time (Arizona and parts of Indiana), you can set a switch
on the top of the clock to disable automatic DST changes in the spring
and fall.
As mentioned above, the soft blue LCD panel
backlight remains on continuously except when battery backup is in effect.
The displayed information appears in black against an illuminated blue
background.
The indoor
temperature can be displayed in either °F or °C,
and both the temperature unit and the 12-/24-hour time format can be
changed at any time during normal operation simply by pressing buttons on the top of the clock. You don't have to reinitiate clock setup to
do this.
You can use the SLEEP function to
let the radio lull you to sleep. The radio turns off after your preselected time,
which can be 5 to 90 minutes. Prior to automatic turn-off, you can
turn the radio off by pressing SNOOZE or RADIO ON/OFF.
The 34202 has a
single daily alarm. You can choose to wake to the radio or to the alarm
with or without snooze. When the alarm is set to on, either RADIO or an alarm icon
appears to the right of the date in the display. You can choose to use the SNOOZE function or turn the
alarm off when it sounds. Pressing the
SNOOZE bar silences the alarm for 9 minutes, or you can turn the alarm off by pressing
RADIO ON/OFF or any other button (except the SNOOZE
bar). When you turn off the alarm, it automatically sets for the
next day. The alarm sounds with a 1-minute series of beeps. The alarm volume is adjustable by means
of the radio volume control knob.
With projection set to on, projection is continuous
and the time and
indoor temperature are displayed alternately.
The 34202's projected display
is among the biggest
and brightest we have seen, and the projector focus works very
well. We took the clock into our low-light environmental test lab (the
windowless restroom in our warehouse area) and tried the projector.
With the clock about 6 feet from the ceiling (the maximum distance
specified for many projection clocks), we estimate the height of the hour and
minutes digits at 7 to 8 inches (seconds are about half that size). Also, the digits are
bright, and we used the focus knob to bring them into really
sharp focus. Just for kicks, we then put the clock on the floor. At 10 feet, the projected display on the
ceiling was still bright and sharp enough to read easily (and,
naturally, even larger at about 12 inches, we'd say). This is
impressive performance indeed.
The 34202 clock operates on 120Vac, 60Hz
house current and uses a
9-volt battery (not included) as a power backup during ac power outages or when unplugged.
The battery
compartment is on the bottom of the clock. Expected
battery life depends on the frequency and duration of power outages or
unplugged periods. Use an alkaline battery, and be sure to check it periodically and replace
it when needed.
The radio in the 34202 has
an internal AM antenna and an external 2-1/2 foot wire as an FM antenna.
We tried the radio in a room full of computers and found both the
reception and sound acceptable for such a modestly priced product. Just
don't expect hi-fi.
Because of this clock's styling and colors, it will fit in
nicely with a variety of interior decors. As mentioned above, the clock
is designed for use as a free-standing unit on a nightstand, table, dresser, shelf, or the like.
Almost anyone can appreciate and
use the SkyScan 34202. Naturally, this inexpensive digital atomic projection clock radio makes an especially thoughtful and practical gift for
family members and friends alike. And because the projected image is
larger and brighter than that of many projection clocks, the 34202 may work for people with a mild degree of vision
impairment.

Note:
This product has "atomic" clock functionality. Atomic, or Radio Controlled clocks receive
a radio signal to set themselves. Like any radio receiver however, they may not
be able to receive the signal if they are in a building with a lot of steel in
the structure, near computers or other electrical equipment that may generate
interference, or if the weather is unsuitable. The signal they receive does not
propagate well during the day. That's the nature of the signal, not the clock.
These clocks are designed to catch the signal when they can, generally in the
middle of the night, calibrate themselves, and then run quite accurately for
days until they can catch another signal. When you first put in the batteries,
they will most likely not set themselves until the middle of the night. That's
normal. By morning, weather permitting, it should be correct. Under less than
ideal conditions, it could take a few days. Daylight savings time changes may
not be made the first night if location and weather are not favorable.
