Chaney Instrument 03160 Silicone Rimmed Meat and Oven Thermometer

From a distance, the Chaney Instrument 03160 Meat and Oven Thermometer looks like an ordinary (albeit colorful) meat thermometer. Look at it more closely, however, and in addition to the large outer dial that indicates the internal temperature of the cooking food, you'll see a smaller dial that tells you the actual temperature inside your oven. This precision instrument features tough stainless steel construction and a non-skid, non-roll red silicone shell that's easy to grip and can withstand heat up to 500°F. The 03160 has a temperature measuring range of 120°F to 216°F for what's being cooked, and a temperature range of 100°F to 600°F for the interior of your oven. This wide oven temperature range actually makes the 03160 suitable for use in barbeque grills as well as conventional ovens so long as the grill temperature does not exceed 500°F. Unlike some cooking thermometers, this one is dishwasher-safe.

The Chaney Instrument 03160 Meat & Oven Thermometer has a 4-1/2 inch stainless steel probe and a stainless steel case with a red silicone shell for easy handling. The black dial is 2-1/2 inches in diameter and protected by a glass lens. The numbers and markings on the dial are white (except for Boil Test; see below), and the pointer is red. This thermometer indicates temperatures in °F.

In addition to the temperature reading, the meat temperature dial of the 03160 indicates the USDA recommended internal temperatures for a variety of meats and cuts. On the back of the 03160's package, along with the instructions, are more USDA recommended internal temperatures for meat. You'll want to keep this list on hand for quick reference.

A really cool feature on the 03160's meat temperature dial is a Boil Test marker at 212°F. This helps to ensure that meats cook to the proper doneness level. To use this feature, immerse the probe in 2-1/2 inches of boiling water. If the pointer registers at Boil Test, you're fine. If you are significantly above sea level and the pointer is lower, subtract that number of degrees from the target temperature of the meat you're cooking. If you are below sea level and the pointer is higher, simply add that number of degrees.
