Chaney Instrument 03158 Silicone Rimmed Instant Read Thermometer

The Chaney Instrument 03158 Instant Read Thermometer is an analog kitchen thermometer with a 1-3/4 inch dial and a pointed temperature probe. You insert the probe into the food you want to check, and in a matter of seconds you read the temperature of the food in °F on the dial. Although the 03158's primary use is for cooking meat and fowl, a wide measuring range of 0°F to 220°F lets you check the temperature of cold foods as well. The 03158 features a non-skid, non-roll red silicone shell that's easy to grip. Unlike some cooking thermometers, this one is waterproof and dishwasher-safe.

The Chaney Instrument 03158 Instant Read Thermometer has a 4-5/8 inch stainless steel probe and a stainless steel case with a red silicone shell for easy handling. The black dial is 1-3/4 inches in diameter and protected by a shatterproof plastic lens. The numbers and markings on the dial are white (except for Freeze Test and Boil Test; see below), and the pointer is red. This thermometer indicates temperatures in °F.

Response time of the Chaney Instrument 03158 thermometer is a rapid 5 to 10 seconds. Attesting to this thermometer's quality is the fact that it's NSF^® Certified. NSF International is an independent, non-profit company dedicated to public health and safety and a leader in standards development and certification.

To ensure maximum accuracy, the 03158 can be quickly and easily calibrated. On the dial in red are a Freeze Test marker at 32 °F and a Boil Test marker at 212°F. To check the thermometer for accuracy and calibrate it if needed, immerse the probe 2 inches into an ice bath or boiling water for 30 seconds. Without removing the probe, grip the calibration nut at the base of the probe by hand and rotate the thermometer to correct the error. By the way, the boiling point of water is 212°F at sea level, and it decreases as altitude increases. Thus, if you are significantly above sea level, it's better to use an ice bath when calibrating the thermometer because the freezing point of water doesn't change with altitude.

Even though the silicone shell on the 03158 can withstand temperatures up to 500 °F, this thermometer is an instant read unit and thus not oven safe. Do not leave it in your oven, rotisserie, microwave, or grill during the cooking cycle.

Included with the Chaney Instrument 03158 Instant Read Thermometer is a handy plastic sheath with pocket clip for transportation and storage. For handy reference, the USDA recommended internal temperatures for common meat types are printed on the sheath. A table with more extensive meat and fowl listings is on the back of the 03158's package. The 03158 is covered by a manufacturer's 1-year limited warranty.
