Acu-Rite 00896 Wireless Digital Rain Gauge

The Acu-Rite 00896 Wireless Digital Rain Gauge lets you precisely monitor rainfall amounts from the comfort of your home--and possibly for some of you, from your office or other place of employment. The indoor rain monitor base unit is extremely compact at only 2-7/8 inches high by 3 inches wide, so it will fit almost anywhere. You can extend the indoor unit's integral folding stand to place it on shelf, table, or desk, or you can fold the stand flush with the back of the unit and hang it on a wall.

The indoor rain monitor of the Acu-Rite 00896 Wireless Digital Rain Gauge is black and silver in color. Its backlit LCD panel displays rainfall amounts in big, bold digits and also displays a Rain Mode icon. The self-emptying outdoor rainfall collector/transmitter is black in color.

Despite its small size, the indoor rain monitor has a large LCD panel that displays rainfall amounts in bold digits a full 3/4 inch tall. Other displayed information includes your selection of inches or millimeters, a rain mode icon that indicates current precipitation status, a radio-reception icon for the outdoor rain gauge collector/transmitter, and low-battery icons for both the indoor and outdoor units.
For night viewing, the LCD panel on the indoor rain monitor has a pushbutton backlight with 5-second auto-off. The 4-digit rainfall display on the LCD panel indicates amounts up to 99.90 inches or 999.9 millimeters, depending on the measuring unit you select. One of three rain mode icons below the rainfall amount indicates No Rain, Light Rain, or Heavy Rain. If desired, you can activate an audible rain alarm that beeps for 10 seconds when the rain mode changes. When the ALARM switch on the indoor unit is set to ON, the alarm sounds when the rain mode changes as follows:

change to No Rain: Average rainfall for the past few minutes is less than 0.02 inch (0.05 mm).

change to Light Rain: Average rainfall for the past few minutes is between 0.02 inch (0.05 mm) and 0.18 inch (4.6 mm).

change to Heavy Rain: Average rainfall for the past few minutes equals or exceeds 0.2 inch (5.1 mm).

The outdoor rainfall collector/transmitter is self-emptying and measures 0.02 inch (0.508 mm) of rain with each swing of its internal counting lever. The rain mode icon displayed on the indoor unit is based on the data received from the outdoor unit:

No Rain: If the last rain mode was No Rain, and a No Rain condition existed for the past 5 minutes.

Light Rain: If the last rain mode was Light Rain, and a Light Rain condition existed for the past 3 minutes.

change to Heavy Rain: If the last rain mode was Heavy Rain, and a Heavy Rain condition existed for the past 1 minute.

The outdoor unit is 3-3/4 inches high by 6-7/8 inches wide by 2-1/4 inches deep.

To use the 00896 Wireless Digital Rain Gauge, you need to select a location for the outdoor unit that is flat, above ground level, and away from any sources of magnetic or electrical interference. You also need to insert batteries in the indoor rain monitor first, and then the outdoor collector/transmitter. Waves appear at the top of a radio tower icon on the indoor monitor to indicate successful synchronization between the outdoor and indoor units. Maximum transmission range of the outdoor unit is 100 feet (30 meters) in open space with no interference.

The RESET button on the indoor monitor lets you choose the time period between measurements or keep a running total up to the instrument's maximum of 99.90 inches or 99.99 millimeters.

The indoor monitor requires two AAA (1.5V) alkaline batteries, and the outdoor collector/transmitter requires two AA (1.5V) alkaline batteries. The batteries are not included and must be obtained separately. As mentioned above, the indoor monitor displays low-battery icons both for itself and for the outdoor unit when replacement becomes necessary.

Just a reminder: Be sure to take the outdoor unit indoors when temperatures fall below freezing.

Exceptionally easy to set up and use, this digital wireless rain gauge is an economical alternative to more expensive wireless rain gauges if you don't need long-distance transmission capability or a bar graph rainfall history display
