Acu-Rite
00786
Wireless Digital
Thermometer
|
|
|
With
Indoor Hygrometer,
Atomic Alarm Clock, Calendar and Moon Phase
|
|
|
The Acu-Rite
00786 Wireless Digital Thermometer with atomic clock displays indoor and outdoor temperatures
and indoor humidity along with the time, month, date, weekday, and moon
phase. For outdoor temperature, a trend arrow indicates steady, rising,
or falling. This thermometer also features a minimum/maximum memory
for both indoor and outdoor temperatures as well as for indoor
humidity. The outdoor temperature is transmitted to the 00786 from up to 100 feet away by an included remote temperature
sensor/transmitter, and this station can work with up to three remotes. You can
select °F or °C for the temperature unit on both the main
station and the remote. Integral to the 00786 is an Atomix®
radio-controlled ("atomic") clock with daily alarm and
snooze. The 00786's four-line LCD panel has a soft green backlight for
night viewing. Both the main station and the remote can be
wall-mounted, or you can extend their fold-out stands for
free-standing use.

The Acu-Rite 00786
wireless thermometer is semi-metallic silver and dark gray in color. Its 4-line LCD panel shows
the outdoor temperature with trend arrow in the top line and the
indoor temperature and indoor relative humidity in the second line. The
third line indicates the time as hour, minutes, and seconds. It
also tells you when Daylight Saving Time is in effect and when reception of the time-synchronization radio
signal from the U.S. atomic clock in Colorado has occurred. The
fourth line of the display shows the current moon phase, digital
month and date, and weekday. Fairly
compact in size, the main station is 5-3/8 inches tall by 3-5/8
inches wide by 1 inch deep unless you extend the integral
folding stand that allows for placement on a shelf, table, or
desk.

The 00786 wireless
thermometer monitors and displays the indoor temperature and humidity plus the
temperature in up to three additional locations by means of the included remote sensor and
one or two additional remotes, which are
optional and sold separately. Additional remotes will be the Acu-Rite
00911 remote, which has its own temperature and humidity display for local viewing. Maximum range of
the remotes is 100 feet (30 meters) in open space with no interference.
You can select °F or °C for the display on both the 00787 and 00911
simply by pushing a button on each unit. Remotes should be mounted in sheltered locations where direct precipitation cannot fall
on them. Although the remotes are splash-resistant, they are not
waterproof. If multiple remotes are used, you can press the CH (channel)
button on the main station to select the desired remote or to select an auto-scroll channel
display. Indoor temperature measuring range of the
00786 is +32°F to +122°F (0°C to +50°C). Outdoor/remote temperature
measuring range is -4°F to +122°F (-20°C to +50°C). A temperature trend arrow
is displayed on the 00786 for each outdoor/remote-channel temperature.
Indoor relative humidity is indicated in percent.
The memory in the
00786 records daily maximum and minimum indoor temperature and humidity values plus maximum
and minimum outdoor temperature values for all remotes in use These
are available for display at the push of the MIN/MAX button and remain
displayed for about 5 seconds. Minimum and
maximum temperatures and humidity are stored and updated until the memory
is automatically cleared every day at midnight. The
LCD panel on the 00786 is about 1-3/4 inches wide by 2-1/2 inches high. Outdoor temperatures are
displayed in bold digits about 5/8 inch tall, and indoor temperature and
humidity are displayed in digits about 3/8 inch tall. Tenths of a degree
for both temperatures are smaller. Hour and minutes digits are bold and about 1/2 inch tall,
while seconds, month, date, and weekday are smaller. The weekday is
indicated by a box around the three-letter day abbreviation in English.
Above the calendar data is
an animated moon phase display that's a little
different from most. The 00786 actually scrolls through eight different
moon phases at a rate of one phase per second. When the current moon
phase is reached, that phase remains displayed for 5 seconds and then the scrolling
continues.
The Atomix clock in the 00786 sets itself automatically and adjusts
automatically for Daylight Saving Time. This clock keeps perfect
time by calibrating itself to 60kHz low-frequency AM radio signals
containing time information supplied by the official U.S. atomic clock
source in Boulder, Colorado. The signals are transmitted from radio
station WWVB located in nearby Fort Collins. Both the atomic clock
source and WWVB are operated by the National Institute of Standards and
Technology, or NIST (a part of the U.S. Commerce Department).
Successful reception of
the time-synchronization radio signal is indicated by a radio tower and
waves icon just above seconds in the third line of the display. After
synchronization occurs, you select your continental U.S. time zone
(EST, CST, MST, or PST). If you live in an area that does not observe
Daylight Saving Time (Arizona and parts of Indiana), you can manually
disable the automatic DST changes.
Time on the 00786 can
be displayed in 12-hour mode with PM, or in 24-hour
mode. The clock has a single daily
alarm that sounds with a 2-minute crescendo pattern.
Pressing the SNOOZE/LIGHT
bar on the top of the main station when an alarm is sounding turns off the alarm for an
8-minute snooze period.
Pressing the SNOOZE/LIGHT bar at any time lights the green LED backlight
for the LCD panel.
Calendar and moon phase
data are pre-programmed from year 2000 through 2099 (default is
2002). The year is displayed only during manual setup, which is
optional. If
you do set the clock manually, you'll need to set the time, year, month,
and date. The weekday and moon phase update automatically.
The 00786 main unit is powered by two AA (1.5V) alkaline
batteries, and the included remote is powered by two AAA (1.5V) alkaline
batteries. These are not included and must be obtained separately.
Expected battery life is about 1 year. If any
remotes will be used in
sub-freezing temperatures, lithium AA batteries are recommended instead of
alkaline. The display on the remote may fade, but the remote will continue measuring and
sending temperature data. When the temperature warms back up,
the display will return.
If you need a medium-small and
inexpensive wireless digital indoor/outdoor thermometer with some really
useful features, the Acu-Rite 00786 may be the perfect choice for both
home and office. Use it to monitor the
temperature in your baby's room, wine cellar, greenhouse, garage,
basement, crawl space, or wherever. This product comes with a
1-year factory warranty.

Note:
This product has "atomic" clock functionality. Atomic, or Radio Controlled clocks receive
a radio signal to set themselves. Like any radio receiver however, they may not
be able to receive the signal if they are in a building with a lot of steel in
the structure, near computers or other electrical equipment that may generate
interference, or if the weather is unsuitable. The signal they receive does not
propagate well during the day. That's the nature of the signal, not the clock.
These clocks are designed to catch the signal when they can, generally in the
middle of the night, calibrate themselves, and then run quite accurately for
days until they can catch another signal. When you first put in the batteries,
they will most likely not set themselves until the middle of the night. That's
normal. By morning, weather permitting, it should be correct. Under less than
ideal conditions, it could take a few days. Daylight savings time changes may
not be made the first night if location and weather are not favorable.
