The Acu-Rite 00326 Digital Hygrometer is a specialized device. It is designed to primarily monitor indoor relative humidity, although it does also monitor temperature as well. The largest portion of the display of the 00326 is dedicated to the indoor relative humidity reading, and an indoor comfort level display that indicates whether the relative humidity is high, OK, or low. The Acu-Rite 00326 is often used by those concerned about fine or antique furniture, hardwood flooring, or fine musical instruments, as humidity swings can cause considerable damage to fine woodwork. The Acu-Rite 00326 can also be used in a food service or manufacturing environment where humidity extremes can be a problem, or anyplace mold and mildew may be a concern.

The Acu-Rite 00326 is finished in blue with silver trim. The most prominent data on the display is relative humidity and a comfort display, although it also displays temperature, plus Min/Max humidity and temperature. The 00326 stands about 3 1/2 inches tall and 2 1/2 inches wide. The unit is designed to either stand on a flat surface, or with the magnet on it's back, stick to a metal surface.

Why should you be concerned with indoor humidity? First, because humidity can affect health. High humidity can cause growth of mold and mildew. Low humidity can contribute to sinus discomfort and infections, dry eyes and skin. In the winter, maintaining humidity can make your home feel comfortable at a few degrees lower temperature, which can reduce heating bills. In the summer, keeping the humidity down reduces the need for air conditioning to maintain comfort.

Humidity levels are critical for other things as well. Low humidity can be damaging to wood furniture and musical instruments, causing wood to shrink and sometimes split, and causing furniture to come apart at the joints. In an office environment, low humidity levels can cause static electricity problems that can result in copy machine and printer paper feed problems, and equipment damaging static discharges. High humidity can cause decomposition of artwork, books, documents, and photographs, as well as problems with paints or inks drying. If you are keeping fine cigars in your home, you know that controlling humidity is a must.

Note: The Min/Max readings on the Acu-Rite 00326 automatically reset themselves daily. There is no manual reset button, and there is no longer term storage of minimum and maximum readings. The reset appears to occur at the time of day that the battery was inserted and operation started. -- Marty

The Acu-Rite 00326 has a one year limited manufacturers warranty. Chaney Instruments (the manufacturer) requests that all warranty issues be directed to them. Details are in the instructions.
